Discussion:
Icons don't show up when emelfm2 is started

Hello, Everyone
On Fedora 19, I have been having the following issue for a long time:
If I start emelfm2 in any one of the possible ways (click on desktop
icon, run emelfm2 from a terminal, "alt f2 | emelfm2") most of the
icons are replaced with what would be displayed if the correct icon is
not available. Here is a screenshot that shows what I'm talking about:
http://www.afolkey2.us/gallery3/index.php/Assorted/emelfm2-screenshot-missingicons

But, if I open a termial, do "su - steve" and THEN run "emelfm2", the
icons show up as expected:
http://www.afolkey2.us/gallery3/index.php/Assorted/emelfm2-screenshot-withicons

To clarify, I'll explain it like this:
1. Open xterm and run "emelfm2"
2. Result: almost no icons
(http://www.afolkey2.us/gallery3/index.php/Assorted/emelfm2-screenshot-missingicons)
3. From that same terminal, run "su - steve" and then "emelfm2".
Result: all icons are displayed as expected:
http://www.afolkey2.us/gallery3/index.php/Assorted/emelfm2-screenshot-withicons

I have this issue with emelfm2 built from SVN, as well as the version
that is currently in the Fedora repository. Just to be safe, before I
began writing this all down, I remove ~/.config/emelfm2. But that does
NOT fix the problem. So, I have the issue with all version of emelfm2,
even with completely fresh configuration settings.

I have not seen this behavior in any other application that I run on my
Fedora 19 system.

If you need any further info, I will be glad to oblige.

Don't know about your situation. But your "no icons" picture looks like
what I get
when I don't install the full package, but just run the just built
executable to test
it out. I.e. maybe there's something with setting the runtime path to the
icons.

Hello, Adam
Here is how I set PATH and XDG_DATA_DIRS for emelfm2:

PATH=/usr/local/spu/assorted/e/emelfm2/emelfm2-20130826/bin:$PATH
XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/local/spu/assorted/e/emelfm2/emelfm2-20130826/share:$XDG_DATA_DIRS

Is this correct?

Just remembered: when I installed emelfm2 from the Fedora repo, it
exhibited the same behavior. I suppose I should take this to the
Fedora list and see if anyone else is having this problem. Like I said
in my original message, I am not having this issue with any other
application. And it doesn't seem to make any difference if I am
running the official Fedora build or the version I compile from SVN...

Steven, the first thing to check would be whether you've overridden the custom-icons path. There's a setting for that on the interface page of the config dialog. If set, it will stay in your config data until changed or reverted to default.

If that's not the issue, next check what happens when you click on a custom icon (or in your case, a missing icon) on any toolbar's config page. There's a directory-selector there.

"use icons directory" is unchecked. Don't know if I've mentioned this
yet, but if I remove "~/.config/emelfm2" and start emelfm2, the icons
are still missing. In that case, "use icons directory" would be set to
whatever it is set at by default.
